When “Oil of Olay” was marketed in 1952, the owners Graham Wulff and Jack Lowe advertised it with the slogan, “Share the secret of a younger looking you”. Even without saying how it will make a person look younger, it already caught people’s attention. Nowadays, things are more sophisticated: there are lotions that work on exfoliating the skin, moisturizing the skin, protecting it from sun damage, replenishing lost nutrients, and more--all with the aim of reversing the effects of time. There is a wide range of products that promise younger-looking skin in two weeks--and other products that tout results immediately! It’s worthwhile to examine what ingredients do anti-aging body lotions have, and which are the most effective.

Difference between creams, ointments, gels, lotions, and serums: It might get a bit confusing seeing the various anti-aging products--the different constitutions will earn them all different names. Here’s a brief summary:
Cream: This will be an emulsion of water in oil (where oil is the main constituent), or oil in water (where water is the main constituent). When water is the main component, the cream will get absorbed into the skin rather quickly (“vanishing cream”); creams with more oil will tend to feel more greasy. There are day creams, with moisturizers, and night creams, to increase skin firmness and remove wrinkles. They're recommended for dry skin and gives benefits such as firming, smoothing, brightening the skin.
Ointment: This will use paraffin, petrolatum, or mineral oil, that leaves a protective, waterproof film on the skin. They can be 80% oil vs. 20% water. The greasy texture is best for relieving dry skin, like chapped hands or lips--but it is not recommended for oily skin.
Gel: Gels will be a transparent product, with a cellulose ether or carbomer in water that gives it a jelly-like texture. They can also have an alcohol base. They convert to a liquid when they contact the skin, leaving just the active ingredients behind.
Lotion: Lotion is similar to cream, but is substantially thinner than cream--it can be called a “gel-based moisturizer”. It can have little to no oil in it. It is usually in a pump container.
Serum: Yet another treatment is the serum, which is more for medicinal purposes to treat a certain condition. They will have vitamins, antioxidants, growth factors, and more. They are recommended for: dehydration, wrinkles, and dryness.
Prefer non-greasy formulas: Even though oil-based treatments will tend to feel more greasy, customers unanimously will prefer a product that moisturizes your skin while it “vanishes” as you rub it in, without leaving you with an oily, greasy feeling.
Good for removing scars: Skin is 70% collagen--and sometimes there are benefits in supplementing it with a cream or lotion. If you just underwent surgery, there are collagen-based compounds that can help fade scars. The Advanced Clinicals Collagen Rescue Lotion can make scars less noticeable, as well as reducing fine lines and wrinkles, owing to its collagen content.
When to apply anti-aging lotion: For best results, it is recommended to apply these lotions after a deep body scrub, and a shower with warm water.
Reversing effects of aging: Olay advertises their “Total Effects 7-in-1 Advanced Anti-Aging Body Lotion” as bestowing 7 benefits to your skin that make you skin look younger. :
Smooths out lines and wrinkles: Besides moisturizing the skin, many anti-aging body lotions will contain SPF 30 (Sun Protection Factor 30), which protects your skin from sun exposure. That reduces the effect of aging due to sun exposure. You’ll also see compounds such as AHA (= Glycolic Alpha Hydroxy Acid), usually derived from sugar cane. It has a pH level of 4--it is an acid that lifts away dead skin cells, encourages collagen production, and reduce lines and wrinkles.
Evens out skin tone, making pores less obvious: You’ll find astringents that cause the skin to contract. This will even out skin tone, and conceal large pores. That’s another effect of acids in these anti-aging lotions. Retinol is also noticed to reduce and shrink pores.
Makes your skin brighter: Many lotions have beta glucan, which removes dead skin and exfoliate the skin. The skin underneath the dead layer of cells will look brighter, giving you a more youthful appearance. Some effective ingredients are hydroquinone, which is known to lighten the skin. Also, MSM (= Methylsulfonylmethane) contains sulfur has a whitening effect.
Hydrate dry skin and make the skin look more firm: Lotions will have oils to moisturize the skin. Another frequently used substance is urea, which promotes rehydration of the skin. Urea can also treat ailments such as psoriasis, eczema, keratosis, and more.
Conceals age spots (hyperpigmentation): Many anti-aging lotions have Vitamin B3, or niacinamide, which stimulates enzymatic reactions that reduce discolored skin due to aging.
Makes skin texture more uniform, restoring elasticity: In order to restore the elasticity of young skin, many find antioxidants to be effective. They will prevent the breakdown of “elastin”, the compound that gives skin its elasticity. That’s why you’ll see ingredients such as green tea extract or Vitamin E in many anti-aging products.
Restores moisture to skin: Glycerin is a common ingredient in many lotions, restoring the skin’s moisture and keeping the skin from drying out.
