Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana founded their fashion line in 1985, and started a fragrance line in 1992, with their “Dolce & Gabbana for Women”. It was a romantic fragrance, with notes of basil, citrus, marigold and vanilla. It won the Perfume Academy’s “Best Feminine Fragrance” award for the year 1993, which established Dolce and Gabbana as a respected name in perfumery.
The most popular women’s fragrances nowadays produced by Dolce and Gabbana are:
“The One”--a combination of floral and oriental notes,
“Rosa Excelsa”-- with heart notes of Turkish Rose and African Dog Rose,
“Light Blue”--with a sky-blue packaging, and heart notes of bamboo, jasmine, and white rose, and
“Dolce”--combining notes of white water lily, white daffodil, and white amaryllis.
Besides perfumes, you can also find their fragrances in eau de toilette and essence forms.
We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a Dolce & Gabbana perfume. It'll help you choose the right type of perfume according to your tastes, read reviews, and compare prices.
You’ll see the names “perfume”, “toilet water”, and “cologne” used when discussing fragrances. Actually, each term indicates the concentration of aromatics in the fragrance, and in the intensity of the scent. The rest can be alcohol, water, and other solvents. Here is a brief list of the concentration of aromatics in fragrances on the market:
Body Mist: 1.5% - 3% aromatics. Body mists would have to be applied more often--even every hour--since the smell dissipates so quickly.
Fine Fragrance Mist: 3% - 7% aromatics.
Eau de Cologne (EdC): Around 5% aromatics.
Eau de Toilette (EdT): Around 5-10% aromatics. These fragrances will typically linger for at least half a day, due to their greater concentration.
Eau de Parfum (EdP): Around 11-15% aromatics. They last longer, usually for an entire day, and will smell more intense. The D&G Rosa Excelsa comes in a Eau de Parfum Spray form.
Perfume: 20% aromatics and higher
A lower concentration of aromatics means that the scent will linger for a shorter amount of time. Perfumes will come in smaller amounts and will be more expensive than body mists and cologne.
Amounts: You’ll notice that the Dolce & Gabbana fragrances will come in different sizes. For example, their “Light Blue” eau de toilette will come in seven different sizes, ranging from a vial size of only 2 ml to a 200 ml size spray bottle.
Beautiful packaging: Dolce & Gabbana invests much in the packaging of their scents. It makes for a very attractive gift idea. For example, the Dolce & Gabbana Rosa Excelsa Eau de Parfum comes with a rose-shaped cap and a distinctive black ribbon.

Beware of counterfeits: Some customers complain that they received poor quality when ordering D&G fragrances, which could indicate that the fragrance was a counterfeit. At the same time, some were alarmed when they saw that their fragrance was manufactured in Germany. This is not a cause for alarm since D&G made their perfumes in Germany from 2009 to 2011.
Where to apply the perfume: Experts suggest applying one or two drops of their perfume to one of the pulse points (such as your neck or wrist). You can also employ a mist of the same fragrance, and spray the room with the scent.
Three-piece sets: You can find Dolce & Gabbana fragrances in exquisite sets. For example, you can purchase “The One” in a set that includes their distinct fragrance in a 2.5-ounce eau de Parfum spray, a 3.4-ounce body lotion, and a 3.4-ounce perfumed shower gel.
Wardrobe of fragrances: Some recommend have a “wardrobe” of fragrances. This way, you can wear a different fragrance every day. Here are some suggestions:
It’s recommended to use floral scents for a hot summer day.
Another popular category is the spice fragrances, which are more appropriate for an evening out, or for a cold day.
For a spring day outdoors, it’s recommended to look for a citrus blend, such as lime, lemon, grapefruit, and freshly-mowed grass. The D&G Light Blue, for example, is considered a citrus scent.
Different notes in fragrances: Fragrances are composed of a number of scents, some of which are noticeable immediately upon application, while others reveal themselves gradually as the alcohol in the fragrance evaporates. You will see a fragrance described as having top (or head) notes, middle (or heart) notes, and base notes. For example, D&G’s “The One” has top notes consisting of bergamot, mandarin, lychee, peach; a heart note of Madonna Lily, and base notes of rich vanilla, resinous amber, musk. Let’s see what that means:
Top notes: These are scents consisting of light molecules that evaporate quickly.
Middle notes: These are essences that start to reveal themselves from 20 minutes to one hour after applying the fragrance.
Bottom notes: These are essences that consist of the largest molecules, that evaporate the most slowly, and are the scent that remains for hours after application. This stage is called the “drydown”, after all the other elements in the fragrance have departed.
Orientals: There are fragrances called “orientals” which have a base of resins and balsams, such as amber, and tend to last longer with greater intensity. D&G’s “The One” is considered a “floriental”--a cross between oriental and floral notes.
