A DVD burner is still useful for backing up material to DVDs, since DVDs are a more stable storage medium than USB flash drives. There are DVD burners that you can attach to your computer either internally, or externally. Internal DVD drives nowadays will be attached with a SATA data and power cable. (The wide 40-pin IDE ribbon is a rarity nowadays.) There are also external DVD burners, which attaches to a computer via a USB cable, or eSATAp cable. DVD burners will be able to read CDs and DVDs as well--Blu-Ray disks will require a Blu-Ray reader, since a Blu-Ray device records with a shorter wavelength of light than DVDs, and thus compresses more information on the disc.
