Dyson Vacuums--Unique, Innovative, and Efficient

James Dyson has been making innovative appliances since 1991--and his ideas are more and more groundbreaking every year. Most of his appliances are motor-powered--so Dyson’s ideas to make more efficient motors make his entire product line more efficient. You’ll see that Dyson products are significantly more expensive than the competitors--but they pay for themselves in terms of the savings that they give you in other areas.

Dyson manufactures vacuum cleaners in all of the major categories: stick vacuums, upright vacuums, handheld vacuums, and robotic models. They tweak certain details, so that they’ll be optimal for pet owners, or for efficiently removing allergens, or that they automatically detect whether you’re vacuuming carpet or hard floor. It’s just a matter of defining what’s most important to you in a vacuum, and selecting that Dyson model.

We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a Dyson vacuum. It'll help you:

  • Choose the right type of Dyson vacuum for your preferences,

  • See useful tips about that particular type of Dyson vacuum,

  • Read reviews of different Dyson vacuum, and what customers are saying,

  • Select the right brand of a Dyson vacuum, and

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types

  • Cordless stick vacuums--Dyson’s contributions in this category include their Dyson Outsize, which can run for 120 minutes on a single charge! (Typical cordless stick vacuums of the competitors typically only run for 40 minutes.) Even more modest models still have as much as 60 minutes runtime. And they are equipped with special sensors to adapt to the floor type and change the vacuuming mode. They’ll also typically convert to a handheld vacuum, such as the Dyson V8 Cordless Stick.

  • Upright vacuums--Dyson has special uprights for animal hair, such as the Dyson Ball Animal 2, with a turbine tool to remove hair from your furniture, and the Dyson Small Ball Allergy, for removing allergens from the room.

  • Handheld vacuums--Dyson’s only handheld vacuum presently is the Dyson V7 Trigger vacuum. You might want to prefer Dyson’s stick and upright offerings since they also convert to a handheld version.

  • Robot vacuums--Dyson’s most recent version of a robot vacuum is the Dyson 360 Heurist. It is operated by a smartphone app, and features an LED light ring, time of flight sensors to map out the entire room where it has to clean and has a 78,000 rpm motor.

What Reviewers Have to Say

  • Two power settings: People who used the Dyson Cordless V7 Animal said that it’s best to use the high power setting when vacuuming on hard surfaces, whether ceramic, tile, or wood. Then go to the lower setting for your carpet.

  • Empties out easily: The dirt cup on a Dyson vacuum empties out easily, so that your hands don’t come in contact with the debris. For example, the Dyson Ball Multi-Floor empties out just at the press of a button.

  • May not be good for plush carpets: Some customers complained that the Dyson Ball Multi-Floor is good on thin rugs and hard floors, but tends to get stuck on plush carpeting. There is an attachment for plush carpets, but it has a cleaning width of only 6”. If you have a large area of plush carpeting, this might not be the right choice.

  • Run time: Different Dyson vacuums will give different amounts of time on a single charge. The Dyson V8 Animal Cordless Stick will give you 8 minutes of vacuuming on Max mode but can let you vacuum for 30-40 minutes on the low mode.

Important Features

  • Cleaner head adjusts automatically: A vacuum’s brush bar is intended for your carpet, but it can scratch a wood or linoleum floor. Dyson’s Ball Animal 2 Upright immediately senses the change and adjusts, so that your hard floor doesn’t get damaged.

  • Upright also has a turbine tool: The Ball Animal 2 Upright has an instant-release wand to reach high places and underneath furniture, as well as a turbine tool for removing pet hair. The turbine tool attaches to a hose, and lets you concentrate the vacuum’s power on a particular spot.

  • HEPA filter: Many Dyson vacuums feature a HEPA filter, that removes 99.5% of impurities bigger than 0.3 microns.

  • Ergonomic: If you buy a Dyson upright, it is designed so that the center of gravity is near where you grip the vacuum. This makes it easier to maneuver since the weight is closest to your hand.

Top-Rated Brands

Dyson, founded by engineer and inventor James Dyson, makes motorized appliances that are known for their innovative design, and higher efficiency. Besides vacuum cleaners, they also make hairdryers and straighteners, fans, air purifiers, heaters, and more. Their vacuums eliminate the use of disposable bags. Bags tend to reduce the vacuum’s suction and also lead to more environmental waste--so a bagless vacuum is more efficient and environmentally friendly.
