There are a number of men’s shavers on the market that are not just for cutting your hair. They’re even capable of shaving your head bald! Some men do it in order to conceal a receding hairline. Others feel that shaving their head gives them a more masculine appearance. It’s also an alternative for people who want a very close haircut because there is less maintenance when your hair is so short.
Whatever the reason, there are a number of electric head shavers on the market, that can be used for trimming facial hair and other grooming needs as well. Some have some interesting accessories for shaving body hair or trimming sideburns, your beard, or other unwanted hair. We’ll go through some of the options available and their particular features so that you can select the electric head shaver that fits your needs the most!
Shavers employ a motor that works in one of three modes:
Rotary motor clippers: This type of motor is employed in the most expensive, professional clippers. The motor converts the motor’s circular motion into a linear motion of the blades, achieving high speed and power.
Magnetic hair clippers: These are usually the least expensive models available. The motor uses an electromagnet in a strong magnetic field, together with a spring mechanism to vibrate back and forth at 7200 RPM. This type of unit tends to become hot during use.
Pivot motor hair clippers: This will use two electromagnets instead of one electromagnet and a spring. It actually vibrates at half the speed of a spring-based motor, at 3600 RPM. A pivot motor hair clippers may cut more slowly than magnetic hair clippers, but they will also generate less heat.
Without looking “under the hood” at how the motor operates, you’ll see two main designs of electric shavers:
Floating rotary heads: These use a number of pivoting circular blades that rotate. The pivoting heads allow for multi-directional shaving. You’ll see shavers with anywhere from 3 to even 6 rotary heads. The Skull Shaver Pitbull Gold Pro Head Shaver is a wet/dry shaver that is shaped to fit the contours of your head, face, or jaw for an extra-close shave.

Straight blade clippers: There are also the familiar electric clippers, with interchangeable plastic guards to allow you to cut hair to different lengths. An example is the Wahl Clipper Elite, with 10 different plastic guard attachments, to cut hair anywhere from a length of 1/16” to 1” (that is, 1/16, 2/16, 3/16, 4/16, 6/16, 8/16, 10/16, 12/16, 14/16, 16/16).

Better to use with shaving cream: If you buy a wet/dry shaver with rotary heads, people noticed that shaving cream will get much better results. The reduced friction will keep the blades cooler, and there will be fewer abrasions to your scalp. Also, users preferred to use a shaver with more rotary heads. This is because most heads have all sorts of hills and valleys, and the more rotary heads mean better coverage of all of these areas.
Shaving accessories: Take note of your shaver’s accessories. The Aidalls Wellup 5-in-1 Electric Shaver has attachments to allow you to trim nose hair, as well as an attachment for trimming your sideburns or beard.
Cord or cordless shaving: Cordless shaving allows you a lot more freedom of movement. You also don’t have to be near an electrical outlet when shaving. The Ritter Mini Beard/Hair Trimmer has a 10-ft long power cord, but the battery will give you 60 minutes of trimming time.
Here are some features of the best electric head shavers that are worth looking for:
Wet and dry shavers: Some of the entries in the Best Reviews Guide list of the best electric head shavers include shavers that are waterproof, allowing you to shave using lather or gel. Depending on the IP (= Ingress Protection) rating, you can even shave while in the shower! The first number in an IP rating indicates protection against dust penetrating into your device, while the second number indicates protection against the ingress of water droplets.
A shaver with an IPX5 rating can withstand low-pressure jets of water. The Skull Shaver Pro Head Shaver has this level of water resistance.
A rating of IPX6 means it’s secure from high-pressure jets of water. The Roziapro Electric Head Shaver for Bald Men has this level of water resistance.
A rating of IPX7 means that it can even be immersed in water for 30 minutes at a depth of more than 15 cm.
Self-sharpening blades: There are clippers with self-sharpening blades. As the clipper blades move back and forth, they rub against a metal strip, which sharpens the blades automatically. (There is also the option of trying to sharpen the blades yourself by rubbing the shaver blades against a sharpening stone or even just aluminum foil.)
Taper lever: Many straight-blade clippers have a taper lever. The lever allows you to push the cutting blade forward. This lets you cut hair lengths that are in-between the length listed on the comb attachments. This way, you can create a look where the hair blends in gradually, from one length to another, instead of a sharp demarcation line between the two different lengths. For example, if you use the 12/16” length on one part and the 14/16” length on another part, the taper lever will allow you to make a gradual transition. This gives a more professional look.

Care of your shaver: It’s important to clean out the accumulated hair regularly so that the blades will move with less friction. After you detach and wash the blades, be sure to apply blade oil. Then reattach the blades, and turn on the clipper to distribute the blade oil into the blades.
