When approaching their late 40s-early 50s, a woman's body produces fluctuating levels of the hormone estrogen. There will be other well-known symptoms: hot flashes, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, and urinary tract infections, to name just a few. When left untreated, these symptoms can go on for a year or so. Doctors can prescribe hormone replacement therapy, giving combinations of estrogen and progesterone that will reduce the symptoms of menopause. But, these hormonal treatments have their risks as well: they can also cause loss of bone mass and risk of fractures. There are also correlations with the risk of breast or uterine cancer, heart attack, and stroke.
Fortunately, there are over-the-counter treatments that are said to alleviate menopausal symptoms. They are not really “estrogen pills”, but natural-based supplements that can imitate human estrogen. For starters, there are plant-derived compounds called “phytoestrogens” that are similar to the estrogen that the human body produces. There is also a plant-based chemical called Diindolylmethane (= DIM), which is reputed to modulate estrogen levels in the body. After consulting with a doctor, you can decide if any of these products will benefit you.
We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting estrogen pills. It'll help you:

Here are some of the active ingredients in natural estrogen supplements that either mimic the effect of estrogen or help the body regulate estrogen levels.
Phytoestrogens: As we mentioned, there are plant-derived compounds called phytoestrogens that mimic the estrogen that the human body produces. Examples of plants that are sources of phytoestrogens are Dong Quai, red clover, soybeans, flax seeds, lentils, barley and hops, ginseng, fennel and anise. Life Extension Estrogen for Women derives its phytoestrogens from soy, Dong Quai, licorice, and other plants.
Diindolylmethane (= DIM): This compound is found in cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cress, turnips, and kale. DIM is reputed to modulate estrogen levels in the body. So a supplement containing DIM can provide hormonal balance for women undergoing hormone replacement therapy. We'll examine several estrogen pill products with DIM in them as well. Smoky Mountain Naturals makes a DIM supplement derived from broccoli and cauliflower, that is so concentrated, it is the equivalent of eating 2 pounds of cruciferous vegetables a day!
Black cohosh: You’ll see some supplements that contain extracts from the black cohosh plant. It is not a phytoestrogen, but it is reputed to raise the body’s levels of estrogen. VH Nutrition’s Estrofy Estrogen Pills contain black cohosh as an ingredient for just this purpose.
There are other compounds present in these supplements, that are beneficial to women going through menopause:
Bioperine: This is a compound found in black pepper, which gives pepper its pungency. Bioperine is found to boost absorption of nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract by 30%. It may also manage stress levels, improve memory, and help regulate weight. Genius Brand Estrogen Balance contains a small amount of Bioperine in its formula.
Grape seed extract: Grape seeds contain proanthocyanidin. It has shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms of menopause while lowering blood pressure and increasing muscle mass. It also reduces the risk of developing breast cancer. Genius Brand Estrogen Balance contains grape seed extract.
Some compounds are even beneficial to men: Compounds containing DIM are good for men as well as women. Men also produce estrogen in trace amounts. But, as they get older, they produce less testosterone, so the effects of the estrogen start to show. DIM supplements are used in order to maintain the proper balance between the hormones in the male body. This will also increase athletic ability, help keep off excess fat, and even support prostate health.
Better sleep and increased alertness: One symptom of menopause is having difficulty sleeping. People who use Genius Estrogen Balance Supplement say that they feel more alert during the day and sleep more soundly at night, since they suffer considerably less from hot flashes. People who used the Amate Life Women’s Support Formula with its phytoestrogens noticed a reduction in hot flashes and improved sleep from the very first pill!
DIM for relieving PMS and irregular periods: Smoky Mountain’s DIM Supplement also gained quite a few customers for its beneficial effect on reducing PMS symptoms in younger women. Also, women who have unusually heavy bleeding, or irregular periods, have seen relief from using a DIM supplement, when coupled with a proper diet and exercise.
Take estrogen supplements only with a doctor’s advice: If you can achieve results with non-hormonal supplements, it is not recommended to take estrogen orally. There is a correlation between estrogen supplements that are not balanced with progesterone and increased risk of heart disease, stroke, pulmonary embolism, blood clots, and breast cancer.
Good for weight management: Proper estrogen levels can prevent the buildup of fat that is so common in middle age. Smoky Mountain Naturals offers a supplement with DIM and Bioperine, that is expressly designed to moderate estrogen-progesterone levels, allowing the body’s metabolism to burn off excess fat.
Fights hormonal acne: Another symptom of menopause is the development of acne. Fortunately, DIM has been found to help relieve the hormonal acne of menopause, while regulating estrogen levels.
