Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that seek to either lose or pick up an electron. When they pull an electron away from another molecule, that molecule has undergone “oxidation”. (Taking away an electron is termed “reduction”, as we’ll see later.) This could damage the molecule from which the electron was removed. It is theorized that buildup of free radicals in an organism is responsible for aging, as well as other degenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.
This is why foods that contain antioxidants are considered beneficial: they nullify the adverse effects of free radicals in the body. The molecule Glutathione is described by some as “the mother of all antioxidants”. This is because it frees up other antioxidants in your diet--such as Vitamin E and Vitamin C--to allow them to eliminate other free radicals. It is created by the body naturally, with the highest concentration in the liver. You can supplement the glutathione in your body by eating certain foods that are rich in Glutathione, such as garlic, onions, broccoli, kale, watercress and more.
There are also dietary supplements that you can take, either in soft gel form or in liquid form. (There are even patches and injections of Glutathione!) People who take them describe improved energy levels and brain function. There is also support for the idea that it strengthens the immune system as well. And there are also creams that you can apply to your skin that contain glutathione, that can help improve the appearance of the skin and remove wrinkles. In people with darker skin tones, they find benefit in soaps and creams containing glutathione, which can whiten the skin by inhibiting the body’s production of the pigment melanin. This will make the skin tone more uniform.
You see that products containing glutathione are all over--depending on what you need them for. We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a glutathione brand. It'll help you:

Skin whitening soap: There are also soaps that contain anti-oxidants and anti-aging ingredients--and glutathione is one of the main ingredients. For example, Shouvy’s Pure Glutathione Whitening Bleaching Soap uses coconut oil, Vitamin B3 and C, radish extract and rice milk extract. It can make your skin look younger and remove blemishes, freckles, pimples, and melasma.

Patches: As the body ages, it produces less glutathione. There are patches of glutathione which supplement the body’s glutathione and can counter the effects of aging. It helps detoxifies the body with its organic amino acids. An example is the PatchMD Glutathione Patch. You wear it for 8 hours a day, and it has the same effect as taking oral supplements.

Liquid: You can find Glutathione in liquid form. An example is Liposomal Glutathione Liquid by Core Med Science. They use liposomal Glutathione, which means that the Glutathione is encapsulated in such a way that it will not be destroyed by stomach acids and digestive juices. This way, it will only get released when it reaches the small intestine.

Softgel caps: Core Med Science makes soft gel caps of reduced L-Glutathione. The “L” means that it has been “reduced” by a chemical reaction that adds an electron to the molecule. This electron is what nullifies free radicals. It is considered more effective functioning as an anti-oxidant than un-reduced Glutathione.

Topical cream: You can also find topical creams that contain glutathione, such as Perricone MD’s Rejuvenating Moisturizer. They are used to remove blemishes and give you an evener skin tone, as well as remove wrinkles and other symptoms of aging skin.

Caution with glutathione soap: A whitening soap may tend to dry and irritate the skin--especially if your skin is sensitive. It is best to apply the soap, and rinse it off quickly, especially on sensitive areas such as the knees or elbows. Shouvy’s Pure Glutathione Whitening Bleaching Soap comes in a white and pink version. The pink version is less concentrated and can be used for washing the entire body. The white version is stronger and requires greater caution.
Softgel caps also help with skin: People who have taken the Jarrow Formula Reduced Glutathione notice that their skin is clearer and even has a glow to it, in as little as a few weeks! They also say that it reduces your appetite, and can help you lose weight.
Taste: One advantage of glutathione in soft gel form is that they don’t have any taste. Foods that the body uses to make its own glutathione are high in sulfur (such as garlic, onions, broccoli, and kale). Taking it in soft gel form will thus be more pleasant.
Take with other vitamins: As we mentioned, Glutathione helps recycle other antioxidant compounds in the body, so that they can do more work removing free radicals. For this reason, you’ll notice that some oral compounds with Glutathione will also contain Vitamin C and E, so as to get the full benefit of these antioxidants as well. If you are using a cream with glutathione, it may contain collagen, glycerin, and palm oil, so as to moisturize the skin as well.
When to take the supplement: The manufacturers recommend taking the oral supplement once a day, on an empty stomach, around 45 minutes before eating. This will lead to the best absorption of the compound. It will help detoxify the liver, strengthen the immune system, and assist in brain health and adrenalin synthesis.
Improving the appearance of skin around the eyes: The skin around the eyes is very sensitive, as evidenced by the circles and bags under the eyes if you don’t get enough sleep. Perricone MD makes a serum that you apply to the eyelids and the area around the eyes. It can tighten the skin around the eyes, and help lighten dark circles. It is recommended to apply it twice a day, in the morning and evening.
