Buying Guide for the Best Golf Shorts

Although apparel in golf doesn't not have much influence on the player's ability, there are still certain rules of etiquette that have to be observed. Golfers must either wear golf shorts or pants. Even women are requested to wear shorts that reach to the knee, if not a skirt or “skort” (a combination of skirt and shorts). It's understandable that shorts are preferred when playing in a hotter climate. But even then, there are still regulations: shorts must reach to the knee area or longer, and have to have a pleated or flat front.

We've put together this guide to help you select the best golf shorts that answer to your needs. It'll help you:

  • Choose the right type of golf shorts,

  • See useful tips about that type of golf shorts,

  • Read reviews of different brands of golf shorts, and what customers are saying,

  • Select the right brand of golf shorts, and

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types

We can distinguish between the types of shorts by the type of fit they provide:

  • Compression: These will be ultra-tight fitting shorts, which fit like a second skin. They stretch to allow mobility. They won't be worn as golf shorts, but can be worn underneath golf shorts. There is some evidence that they can prevent sports injuries.

  • Fitted: These fit tightly, next to the skin, but not so much that they squeeze. These are the most common in women's shorts.

  • Semi-Fitted:These are designed to fit closely, but not snugly. Women's “skorts” will usually be of this type.

  • Loose: These shorts allow for a more relaxed fit, being even somewhat baggy.

  • Skorts”: Women golfers have the option of wearing a cross between a skirt and shorts, called “skorts”. They can have a pocket in the back, to hold a scorecard or the like.

What Reviewers Have to Say

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

  • Durability: One satisfied customer said that the Nike golf shorts don't wear out over time (they do get dirty with use, as is understood). So the durability of the fabric is a big factor.

  • Freedom of movement: People prefer stretchable fabrics, for greater freedom of movement. They can swing the club, walk or run in comfort. The Adidas Golf Climalite Tech Shorts are acclaimed for their stretchability.

  • Gripper Tape: Some shorts have silicone gripper tape strips inside the waistband, so that it will fit more snugly.

Important Features

  • Wick away sweat: There are fabrics that are made to wick away sweat that accumulates during exercise. The Nike Men's Flat Front Tech Golf Shorts are 95% polyester, 5% spandex, and have this feature to keep you dry and comfortable. Cotton will tend to absorb sweat, which is not so desirable. Polyester doesn't absorb so much, so the moisture evaporates quickly. The IZOD Short Classic Fit shorts have a soft, wind-resistant feel, that allow you to stay cool in the heat.

  • Pockets: You'll probably want pockets on your golf shorts to hold balls, tees, scorecards and the like. Some shorts have 4 pockets.

  • UV protection: Since you're exposed to the sun for a long time when you play golf, it's important that the shorts offer you protection from the sun. Look that the shorts have UV protection. For example, some shorts will have a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) of 40 or 50, which blocks over 97% of ultraviolet rays.

  • Inseam length: The inseam is measured from the crotch to the end of the length of the shorts. That will tell you the length of the shorts. Take note of that length, so as to be sure that the shorts reach to or below your knee. A person who is 6 feet or more will require an inseam of 11 inches.
