The years of adolescence--from 12 to 17 years of age--is the critical period of a person’s growth. The epiphyseal plates, located at the tips of the long bones in the arms and legs, are where the growth in height takes place. These plates close up between the ages of 18-21 in boys, and between 16-18 in girls. Increasing body height becomes much less likely after this. That’s why it’s important for young men and women in this period of their lives to maintain good nutrition, to ensure that they reach their proper height potential.
There are many supplements on the market, touted as “height growth pills”, which are formulated to provide the body with precisely the nutrients that it needs at this crucial stage of life. We all grew up hearing that milk and milk products are important sources of Vitamin D and calcium. But there are height growth supplements that also contain collagen, glucosamine, and chondroitin, which are so important for proper development of the body’s skeleton and cartilage. Other supplements contain magnesium or silicon, to assist absorption of calcium in the bones. And they’re important later in life as well: we hear all the time of the effects of osteoporosis and arthritis in older subjects--and supplementing our diet to ensure stronger bones will help us avoid these ailments.
We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting height growth pills. It'll help you:

Of the various supplements and formulas that we reviewed, we noticed the following were the most common ingredients:
Vitamin D: This vitamin is responsible for the absorption of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate. The body manufactures Vitamin D just from exposure to the sun--but supplementing it will help prevent stress fractures. Vitamin D supplements are also recommended for older people, to prevent the loss of calcium from the bones, that is typical later in life.
Calcium: The greatest concentration of calcium in the body is in the bones--in fact, the bones and teeth contain 99% of the body’s calcium! Not having enough calcium in the diet can lead to soft or brittle bones. Therefore, it stands to reason that calcium is essential for proper bone growth and that it will be the main ingredient in any height growth supplement.
Vitamin K: Vitamin K allows calcium to bind to proteins and build up in bone tissue. One of the symptoms of Vitamin K deficiency are brittle bones--so a bone growth supplement should have Vitamin K, to make sure that the calcium you eat goes to building bones. Also, without proper amounts of Vitamin K in the diet, calcium may start to leach out of the bones, as in osteopenia (where the bones have a reduced density of minerals) and osteoporosis (fragile bones that fracture easily). This calcium can end up in soft tissue, such as the heart or blood vessels--increasing the risk of heart disease.
Hydrolyzed collagen: Collagen is the protein that is a major component of the bones, joints, and skin. Hydrolyzed collagen is collagen that has been broken down into molecules that are absorbed by the body more quickly. Hydrolyzed collagen contains essential amino acids, that the body must receive from its diet and can’t produce on its own. You’ll see many supplements that contain this, for quick absorption, such as NuBest Tall and Jarrow Formulas Ultra Bone Up.
Magnesium: This mineral is indirectly responsible for allowing your bones to accumulate calcium. Magnesium converts Vitamin D into calcitriol, which is what works to allow the bones to absorb calcium.
Activated silicon: The Jarrow Formulas Ultra Bone-Up also contains activated silicon, which is also seen to aid the deposit of calcium in the bones and build the bone matrix.
Glucosamine and chondroitin: These are compounds found in the body’s cartilage--and there are supplements, such as the PureHeight Plus Height Enhancement Dietary Supplement, that contain these compounds. They are added to enhance the body’s cartilage, which serves as a cushion in the body’s joints.
Probiotics and enzymes: The Garden of Life Vitamin Code Raw Calcium Supplement contains probiotics and enzymes which don’t directly affect bone density--but they will assist absorption of the nutrients in your diet to ensure that your bones receive that extra calcium.
Here are some of the things reviewers mentioned about height growth pills:
Beware of scams: Despite claims of being able to gain 3” to 12” in height within a year of taking one of these supplements (as made by the PureHeight Plus+ manufacturers), more honest dealers will admit that nothing can assure that their supplement will actually cause you to gain in height. As we mentioned, once the epiphyseal plates in the skeleton have fused together, a person will essentially stop growing in height. These dietary supplements can claim to give you stronger and healthier bones--and that’s a definite plus, whatever your height happens to be.
Prevent curvature of the spine: Even though these supplements may not actually help you grow in height, there is a way that they can keep you from losing height. As we age, a person can lose height due to lordosis of the spine--where the spine starts to curve more due to the vertebrae losing bone mass. This makes a person slump forward--which is so familiar in older people. With proper bone supplements, you can eliminate the causes of this excessive curvature, so you can stand straighter and taller.
Source of the calcium: Jarrow Formulas derives the calcium in their supplement from free-range New Zealand calves, in the form of the mineral MicroCrystalline HydroxyApatite (MCHA). They claim that the calcium in MCHA will get absorbed more gradually into the system than calcium carbonate or calcium citrate, which are the compounds in antacids that contain calcium. They claim that this gradual absorption yields better results. Other experts say that MCHA is more expensive than the other sources of calcium--and that the results don’t justify the higher price. It’s more important to balance out your diet with the other minerals and vitamins that we mentioned above. Others say that calcium from a plant-based source, such as the Garden of Life Raw Calcium Supplement, leads to increased bone density even in older patients.
Don’t take too much calcium: Even though we’ve shown how important calcium is in our diet, it’s also possible to overdo it. Studies have found that taking too much calcium, without balancing it with proper amounts of magnesium, will lead to abnormal crystal formations in the bones--actually weakening the bones and increasing the risk of fractures! So, it’s recommended to take the supplements with calcium and magnesium. And don’t exceed the recommended dosage--usually no more than 3 capsules a day.
