Buying Guide for the Best Joggers

Parents who are fitness-minded would like to jog to stay in shape, but want to be able to watch over their child at the same time. Jogging strollers, or “joggers” for short, were made just for this purpose. They look like regular strollers, but are constructed for more rugged conditions (such as different types of terrain) and traveling at higher speeds, while providing for your child's comfort at the same time. Joggers will also usually have compartments to hold accessories to make your jog more pleasant—both for you and your toddler. Here is a guide to some of the best joggers on the market.

Types

  • Double or single joggers: For children less than six months old, it's preferable to take them along using a baby carriage or stroller. Joggers are typically the choice for taking along a child who can already sit up. If you have two toddlers between the ages of six months – 5 years old, each weighing up to 50 lbs (22.5 kg), you might consider a double jogger.
  • Fixed wheel or swivel wheel: Joggers can come with a fixed front wheel or a swivel wheel. The swivel wheel is appropriate when you travel slowly, but you want to be able to maneuver, as in a stroller. Joggers, on the other hand, will have a fixed wheel instead. That makes it more stable when going at high speeds. If the wheel swivels, it's harder to jog with the stroller, because you have to keep both hands on the handlebar. But even a jogger with a swivel wheel will usually also have a front-wheel locking device.

What Reviewers Have to Say

Based on all the consumers' reviews we've scanned, these are the top things they mentioned about their new stuff:

  • Safety: A jogger should have a harness to secure the child inside. It is not advised to use a jogger for a child under six months of age. Between 6 months to a year, take the child in a jogger only on smooth terrain, like a sidewalk. When the child is over a year old, then it should be safe enough to go on uneven surfaces, like grass or gravel. Also, some joggers have a wrist strap, to keep the jogger from rolling away if you lose your grip.
  • Comfort: Typically a jogger has larger wheels than a stroller. The larger wheels help make the ride less bumpy on rough terrain. Also, the wheels are inflatable, instead of being of solid rubber as in most strollers. That also makes the ride more smooth for the child. Some joggers even have shock absorbers to adjust to rough surfaces. Also, the jogger can be adjusted to a number of angles, so that the child can recline or sit up.
  • Durable material, easy to clean: The canopy and seat should be easy to clean. You'll want to make sure that the fabric comes off the metal frame easily. In general, the seat and canopy should be machine-washable.

Important Features

  • Versatility: Companies that make joggers usually make car seats and bicycle trailers as well. Many times they will make a child's car seat that fits into the frame of the jogger. And the jogger converts to a bicycle trailer! So it's worth looking for a jogger that can convert to a car seat and trailer as well.

  • Protection from the elements: A jogger should have an attachable rain cover to protect the child from wind and rain. Look to see that you can both attach the rain cover easily and store it away when not in use.

  • Accessories: Many joggers have compartments for a cup or a baby bottle—or maybe two of each. Some have a compartment for a helmet for the child. Others can accommodate speakers that you can hook up to a MP3 player, so you can listen to music while jogging.

  • Portability: Joggers tend to be bulkier and stronger than strollers, but that doesn't mean that you won't want to be able to fold it up and put it in the trunk of your car. Keep an eye open to see if the jogger can be packed away (and opened up again) easily.

Top-Rated Brands

BobFounded in California in 1994 by Roger Malinowski and Philip Novotny, the company was originally called Beast of Burden, but its name was later shortened to the acronym B.O.B., or "Bob". They started manufacturing bicycle trailers, and later introduced the features of their trailers into baby strollers and joggers, resulting a unique line of products.

Baby Jogger--Baby Jogger was a company started in 1984, to meet the needs of parents who are avid joggers.
