If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, such as dark patches on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and other parts of the body, there are a number of soaps, creams, and lotions that can potentially lighten and even skin tone. There are stronger products, such as creams for treating melasma, which work on acne scars, freckles, and other skin discoloration. But they may contain ingredients such as hydroquinone, which, while effective, can’t be used for an extended period of time.
A skin whitening soap should be something more gentle so that it can be used as part of your skin care routine while lightening the skin tone. You should be able to take a shower or even bathe in it. You’ll find here a number of products that ingeniously use natural ingredients for skin whitening, either by reducing production of skin pigment or by exfoliating dead, discolored skin layers.
We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting a skin whitening soap. It'll help you:

Skin whitening soaps can have a range of active ingredients:
Glutathione: This is a compound that is found naturally in fruits, vegetables, and meats. It is effective in slowing the effects of aging by cleaning the body of free radicals, brightening skin tone, and improving the immune system. It whitens the skin by inhibiting melanin production. An example of a product that uses Glutathione is Shouvy’s Pure Glutathione Whitening Bleaching Soap.
Kojic Acid: This is produced from a fungus growing on rice when it undergoes fermentation. (The fungus is incidentally is used to make Japanese rice wine--sake.) It also blocks the formation of pigment--so it will be used in a number of skin whitening products and treatments for melasma. Koji White’s Lightening Soap uses Kojic Acid and Glutathione.
Vitamin B3: Vitamin B3, or niacin, reduces acne breakouts--and skin whitening soap usually aims at removing the uneven appearance of the skin due to acne. Vitamin B3 also leads to younger skin that is more supple.
Papaya extract: “Papain” is an enzyme naturally found in papaya. It has been seen to cause exfoliation, removing the dead top layer of the skin and revealing the new skin underneath. So whitening soaps will utilize papaya extract as well, as a natural exfoliant. Koji White’s Kojic Acid & Papaya Skin Lightening Soap employs papaya extract in their formula.
Antioxidants: Antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E protect the skin from sun damage and reverse skin damage due to sun exposure. They can also whiten the skin.
May have to wash the soap off quickly: If you have sensitive skin, you may experience skin irritation if you don’t wash the soap off quickly. People who used the Natichaa Glutathione and Papaya Whitening Soap try to wash the soap off quickly after application, to keep the soap from drying and irritating the skin.
Some are safe for everyday use: At the same time, there are whitening soaps that are safe and mild enough for everyday use. The pink version of the Shouvy Pure Glutathione Whitening Bleaching Soap can be used as a regular soap for washing your body. (It is less concentrated than the white bar’s formula.)
Not for whitening your entire complexion: Some women said that the Koji White’s Kojic Acid Papaya Skin Lightening Soap gives good results for removing dark spots--but you can’t expect it to lighten your entire complexion. You’ll experience more even-toned skin, however.
Rejuvenates skin as well: Many of these skin whitening soaps will not only make your skin tone lighter. They also will have ingredients that nourish the skin. The Natichaa Glutathione & Papaya Whitening Soap, besides the exfoliant in papaya and the melanin inhibitor in Glutathione, has collagen, glycerin, and palm oil, to moisturize and tighten skin.
Have to use it for an extended period: The active ingredients in these soaps, such as Kojic acid, are used to treat freckles, acne scars, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and skin discoloration. But they won't bring about a permanent change--you will have to continue using it. Also, you should have to use the soap for at least 2 weeks before you see any results.
