Your Guide To Buying Toilet Paper

In Western countries, toilet paper is practically a necessity. There are still societies that prefer using water, such as a bidet, for hygiene purposes. But there’s no question that toilet paper is an important product in American bathrooms. Estimates are that, on average, every American uses over 23 rolls of toilet paper per year!

But there is a vast range of qualities and quantities of toilet paper. There is a no-frills, economical version, which tends to be rather coarse. Then there is double-ply toilet paper, which will typically be more absorbent. For the environmentally-conscious, you’ll find toilet paper that is primarily made from recycled paper. And, if softness is more important to you, you’ll see that there are also cottony-soft toilet papers. They are treated with aloe, lotion, or even wax to reduce friction. (That might be important for infants, or people suffering from irritation.)

We’ve composed this buyer’s guide to help you make the right decision when selecting toilet paper. It'll help you:

  • Choose the right type of toilet paper,

  • See useful tips about that particular type of toilet paper,

  • Read reviews of different types of toilet paper, and what customers are saying,

  • Select the right brand of toilet paper, and

  • Compare prices and find the best deals.

Types

  • One-ply: These are rolls of 1 layer of paper. One-ply rolls of toilet paper will be able to hold 1000 sheets on a roll. There are also jumbo rolls that can fit twice the amount--2000 sheets on a roll. But these require larger dispensers.

  • Two-ply: These are rolls of toilet paper consisting of two layers of paper. They will have around 500 sheets per roll--but in some cases, the thicker toilet paper will have greater absorbance than the one-ply roll. That means that you can achieve the same results with less paper.

  • Pre-moistened: Since the year 2001, you can find “premoistened toilet paper”. They are like baby wipes, but are disposable can be flushed down the toilet.

What Reviewers Have to Say

  • Family rolls: Cottonelle’s UltraClean Care Toilet Paper is a pleated, rippled toilet paper. Its unique texture makes it three times stronger and thicker, and twice as absorbent as the “no-frills” toilet paper. The Mega Roll will give you only 380 sheets on a roll, and the Clean Care Double rolls will have only 190 sheets each. But they’ll be so absorbent, each roll can be as effective as 4 rolls of single-ply toilet paper.

  • Scented toilet paper: There are brands of scented toilet paper, such as Angel Soft. They add a lavender scent to their toilet paper. Some customers said that the scent is as good as adding an air freshener to your bathroom.

Important Features

  • Wet strength: Some people prefer to wet their toilet paper before using it. In such a case, it is important to look at a toilet paper’s wet strength when making a purchase. If toilet paper has greater wet strength, it will have more of a paper-towel consistency. That means that it won’t break up when wet. You’ll be able to accomplish the same cleanliness with less paper that way.

  • The number of sheets in a roll: This will vary greatly depending on the brand. Cottonelle UltraClean Care is an especially absorbent toilet paper that comes in 4 sizes:

    • Big: 126 sheets

    • Double: 154 sheets

    • Family: 203 sheets

    • Mega: 380 sheets

  • Tubeless rolls: Since the tube of toilet paper typically gets thrown out instead of recycled, many companies now make toilet paper rolls without the familiar cardboard tube in the middle. (Scott estimates that a family of 4 will typically use enough toilet paper to be able to build a couch from the cardboard tubes!) Scott Tube-free Toilet Paper has removed the cardboard tube--which allows you to use the roll to the very last sheet.

  • Don’t flush regular towelettes: Makers of baby wipes warn not to flush the towelettes down the toilet since they can clog sewer systems. Even if they make it down the toilet, they can form troublesome “fatbergs”, by combining with other sewage. On the other hand, there are brands of toilet paper, such as Charmin’s UltraStrong Mega Roll, that is clog-safe and septic tank safe. It is assured to break up in a septic tank, despite having a washcloth-like texture.

Top-Rated Brands

  • Presto!--is Amazon’s brand of toilet paper, paper towels, and liquid laundry detergent. They make ultra-soft and ultra-strong types of toilet paper.

  • Angel Soft--is a brand of Georgia-Pacific, founded in 1987. Georgia-Pacific makes wood and paper products, and building products such as plywood, plasterboard, lumber, and more. Angel Soft makes classic white toilet paper, lavender scented toilet paper, and mega-rolls, which fits 4 rolls into one (over 480 sheets per roll).

  • Charmin--is a Procter & Gamble product. They advertise that their toilet paper is more absorbent and economical than the competition, letting you use 4 times less. They make Essentials Bathroom Tissue, Ultra Soft, and Ultra Strong Bathroom Tissue.

  • Scott--was founded in 1879 in Philadelphia by E. Irvin and Clarence Scott. They claim to be the originators of selling toilet paper in the familiar roll. Their products now include flushable wipes, rapid-dissolving toilet paper, paper towels, rags, and more.

  • Cottonelle--is a brand of Kimberly-Clark, which was founded in Neenah, Wisconsin in 1872 as makers of baby and family care products. Cottonelle’s products include Ultra CleanCare, Ultra ComfortCare, and Ultra GentleCare toilet paper, and flushable wipes with and without designs.
